What is involved in English GCSE studies?

Students study two GCSE qualifications:

  • English Literature
  • English Language

English Literature includes:

  • Shakespeare play
  • poetry anthology
  • 19th century text
  • modern text

Students must understand these texts deeply and write analytical essays on them in the exams.

English Language includes two papers:

  • fiction
  • non-fiction

Students analyse language and structure and develop strong creative and persuasive writing skills.

How do Ruth's courses work?

Ruth's courses are designed to give students the depth of knowledge needed to succeed in GCSE English.

  • Each course focuses on one literature text or one language paper
  • Courses run for 6-7 weeks (half term length).
  • Six courses cover the full GCSE English curriculum

Classes take place:

  • in Ruth's purpose-built classroom, or
  • online via Zoom

Some courses run as hybrid classes, with in-person and online students learning together.

Where necessary, Ruth also supports her students one-to-one

What do the students learn?

To succeed in English, students must improve:

  • their knowledge of the set texts - particularly the themes and ideas
  • their ability to analyse language and structure
  • their essay writing skills

Courses are structured to develop all three of these areas.

Students receive two short video lessons each week to prepare for class.

During lessons students:

  • practise past paper exam questions
  • brainstorm and plan essays
  • discuss interpretations
  • receive feedback on written work

This ongoing feedback is a crucial part of the learning process and helps students steadily improve their exam writing.

Ruth has an enhanced DBS certificate, a first aid qualification and a safeguarding certificate.
